Just after 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon the Stanton County Sheriff’s office responded to and investigated a two vehicle accident on Hwy 275 at MM #79 about two miles east of Norfolk. The accident involving an eastbound mini-van and an eastbound semi pulling an unloaded flatbed occurred after the van who was a rural mail carrier had pulled onto the highway and was later struck by the semi. The impact caused the van to leave the roadway to roll striking several trees and coming to rest in the south ditch. The 28 year old driver appears to have been ejected during the accident and was later flown to UNMC by medical helicopter after being stabilized by Norfolk Fire and Rescue. The driver of the semi declined medical treatment at the scene. U.S. postal authorities did arrive on scene and secured undelivered U.S. mail inside and outside the wreckage. The eastbound lanes of Hwy 275 were closed for more than 2 hours as traffic was rerouted onto the westbound lanes for about a half mile. The investigation remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s office and Stanton County Emergency Management assisted with traffic control. Stanton County Public Power also responded to the scene as a power pole support was struck during the collision.
