Busy Day With Fires and Injury Traffic Accident on Hwy 24

At about 9:56 a.m. on Tuesday morning the Stanton County Sheriff’s office responded to a report of a house fire on 562nd Avenue just north of Hwy 275. Upon arriving within about 8 minutes, Sheriff Unger and Emergency Manager Mike Frohberg entered the house and found two people still in the smoke filled residence trying to put out the fire and evacuate several cats. The two were removed from the house and the main visible fire in the kitchen area was put out by them using a fire extinguisher and the house was then ventilated until Stanton Fire arrived on scene. No one was injured and the cats were also uninjured. The house interior suffered significant damage in the kitchen area and smoke damage throughout Then about 1:00 p.m. the Sheriff’s office and Emergency Management also responded to Hwy 24 just east of Crown Road where a Norfolk Transfer Semi-Trailer had caught fire as it travelled east on Hwy 24 causing a lot of smoke in the area and a large active fire in the cargo trailer that Norfolk Fire and Rescue worked on for more than an hour to bring under control using an aerial truck and with assistance from a Stanton Fire Tanker. The highway was blocked and traffic was rerouted around Hwy 24 to Old Hwy 8 or Hwy 275 as the highway was blocked for more than an hour. During this time a medical emergency just after 2:00 p.m. in Stanton took place on Ivy Street and Norfolk Rescue was requested to respond after it was determined Stanton Rescue was unavailable. Norfolk had to decline the call for service as they became busy with a three car injury accident just to the east of the fire scene on Hwy 24 that occurred when a stopped black sedan was struck in its left rear by a red Chevy Suburban that failed to slow and stop for the stopped traffic and was travelling at highway speeds according to witnesses. The suburban then continued onto the shoulder striking another vehicle. The driver of the sedan, a 40 year old Stanton woman was transported to FRHS by ambulance and the 62 year old driver of the suburban was uninjured and was cited for Following too Close. A one month old was also checked at the scene and found to be o.k. after being inside a vehicle involved in the collision. Both Norfolk Fire and Rescue and Battle Creek Rescue responded to this crash scene on Hwy 24. The person injured in the medical emergency in Stanton was treated and transported to FRHS by Pilger Rescue after they were requested to cover the emergency call.
