Icy Road Conditions Lead to Near Head-On Crash on Hwy 275 Just East of Norfolk

At about 3:53 p.m. on Monday afternoon the Stanton County Sheriff’s office responded to and investigated a two vehicle traffic accident about two miles east of Norfolk on Hwy 275. The accident occurred when a eastbound pickup driven by William Bowman, 27, of Wisner lost control due to icy road conditions and crossed the center grassy median and struck the rear tank of a westbound Semi-truck Tanker. Bowman and a 33 year old passenger Joseph Brown, of rural Howells were seriously injured and transported to FRHS by Norfolk Fire and Rescue. Seatbelts did not appear to be in use in the pickup and airbags did deploy. The 38 year old semi driver, Tyler Rasmussen of Kenesaw was not injured. Rasmussen is credited by witnesses with taking extreme measures to avoid a head-on collision. The westbound lanes of Hwy 275 near South Eastwood were blocked for about an hour as the scene was investigated and cleared. The pickup is considered a total loss and the tanker suffered serious damage. Stanton County Emergency Management assisted with traffic control at the scene. **Update The driver of the pickup (William Bowman) was later transferred to an Omaha hospital for further treatment.
