Simple Trespassing Call Leads to Physical Resistance and Assault on a Deputy Sheriff

At about 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening the Stanton County Sheriff’s office was dispatched to a complaint of trespassers on a private dock at Willers Cove lake near Pilger. Two deputies responded to the call for service and observed an adult male and two juveniles on the private property dock. When they had contact with the adult male he refused to cooperate and provide his name as requested, but did advise he knew he wasn’t allowed to be on the dock. The three trespassers then made their way to a cabin at the lake area followed by deputies and it was then the male attempted to enter the cabin (later found to be his) and slam the door shut on the deputies. This attempt failed as the slamming door was stopped from closing and a physical altercation took place during which the adult male, Paul Heimann, 51, of Omaha allegedly refused to cooperate and resisted efforts to control him and take him into custody at one point trying to bite deputy on the arm. During this struggle a taser was deployed on Heimann and he still continued to struggle and refused verbal commands to cooperate. He was finally subdued and placed in handcuffs. Due to use of a taser on him he was medically cleared at the scene by Pilger EMS and then taken for full medical clearance at FRHS in Norfolk, before being jailed on charges of Criminal Trespass, Obstructing a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Third Degree Assault on a Peace Officer pending the setting of a bond. One deputy received some minor injuries, but declined medical treatment. The two juveniles present were cooperative and were each given written warnings for Criminal Trespass. Heimann was released on Friday afternoon after posting a cash bond.
