Just after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night, a four wheeler was observed in Stanton being operated recklessly at high speeds and running multiple stop signs just east of the courthouse. Sheriff Mike Unger was on foot in the area when he attempted to get the speeding four wheeler to stop near 7th and Jackpine. The driver of the four wheeler failed to stop and nearly struck the Sheriff in the street as he accelerated away at speeds estimated to be 70 to 80 mph in the residential area. The driver was quickly identified as Steven Svatos, 48, of Stanton and it was soon found that he fled east and then north out of Stanton and tire tracks were followed by the Sheriff’s office that led to the Hoskins area where the four wheeler was located. Svatos was subsequently contacted by cell phone and turned himself into the Sheriff’s office back in Stanton. He was subsequently charged with Speeding, Multiple Stop Sign Violations, Multiple ATV Violations, Willful Reckless Driving, Driving While Intoxicated-2nd offense and after the service of a search warrant at his residence on Ivy Street in Stanton, he was also charged with being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, A shotgun and ammunition for the weapon was located in his bedroom during the search. There were several children on the area streets when the reckless behavior was taking place. Svatos was jailed pending the posting of a $100,000.00 bond.
