Just after 8:40 a.m. on Thursday morning the Stanton County Sheriff’s office responded to and investigated a two vehicle accident on Northeast industrial Highway at the intersection of John Doherty Drive (558th Avenue). The accident occurred when a pickup leaving the Nucor Steel entrance pulled into the path of an eastbound SUV on Northeast Industrial Highway. The collison left both vehicles in the middle of the roadway and caused significant traffic congestion in the area. The 41 year old female driver of the SUV was treated at the scene first by Nucor emergency response (EMS) team and then by Norfolk Fire and Rescue. She did decline transport and seatbelt use and multiple airbags deployment are credited with lessening any serious injuries. The 39 year old male driver of the pickup declined treatment. The roadway was blocked for nearly an hour as the scene was cleared and multiple semi trucks and trailers were delayed entering the Nucor plant as a result of the accident. The SUV is considered a total loss and the pickup was removed from the scene. Reports will be forwarded to the county attorney to determine if any charges are filed.
