At about 4:25 a.m. on Thursday morning, the Stanton County Sheriff’s office was notified of a vehicle accident by an automatic cell phone accident notification. The accident was reported at the intersection of Golf Course Road and 570th avenue southeast of Stanton. Upon arriving the Sheriff’s office found the lone driver, Barry Steinkraus, 76, of Plainview trapped in the vehicle and bleeding after his vehicle had left the roadway and struck a grove of trees. He was removed from the wreckage and was then treated at the scene and medically cleared by EMS. He was found to be intoxicated and was placed under arrest for DWI and later booked at the Sheriff’s office where he tested nearly twice the legal limit. Seatbelts appear to have been in use and the vehicle was a total loss. Stanton Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene. ” The driver was very lucky and we know alcohol and driving don’t mix🍻, especially when you are headed towards Plainview according to the driver and are driving the opposite direction.” SHERIFF MIKE UNGER
