At around 2:15 a.m. on Friday morning a vehicle pursuit was initiated by the Wayne Police Department in Wayne with a black Ford Mustang that then fled west on Hwy 35 and was pursued by Wayne Police until they discontinued on Hwy 35 near Winside. A short time later the mustang was observed on Hwy 35 near the Stanton County line by the Stanton County Sheriff’s office and the vehicle refused to stop and turned back eastbound on Hwy 35. The vehicle then fled at speeds of more than 120 mph and was pursued by the sheriff’s office. The mustang continued to flee on Hwy 35 at high speeds and at the Hwy 35 and 98 junction the mustang recklessly disregarded the eastbound stop sign and turned east on Hwy 35 back towards Wayne at more than 100 mph. About two miles west of Wayne, the mustang was successfully spiked with a tire deflation device by Wayne P.D. and three tires were deflated, and the mustang was finally stopped at the west edge of Wayne on Hwy 35. The driver, Treyton Smith, 20, of Springfield was taken into custody and initially provided a fake Wisconsin drivers license with an incorrect birthdate, before providing his correct identity. Smith was also found to have been illegally consuming alcoholic liquor and arrested for DWI as well. A female passenger in the vehicle was also detained and may face possible charges. Smith was later booked and jailed on numerous charges of Speeding 120+ in 65 mph zone, Operating a Motor Vehicle to Avoid Arrest, Willful Reckless Driving, Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal to Submit to Chemical DWI Test, False Imprisonment, Possession of Fake I.D. “Fortunately No One was hurt during the high risk incident and this just shows how alcoholic liquor and driving don’t mix and lead to stupid and reckless decisions by drivers.” SHERIFF MIKE UNGER
